In Memory of Stephen “Steve” Turner
— A Gift to the Hope of the Future
Stephen “Steve” Turner loved life, people, and the world around him. He was a deeply loved husband, son, father, grandfather, brother, godfather, colleague, mentor, and friend.
Steve met people with warmth, curiosity, and a gentle sense of humor. He had a rare ability to truly see others, to encourage them, and to make them believe in themselves. A conversation with Steve, or just a few thoughtful words from him, could leave a lasting impression for life.
Teaching was his great passion. He had an extraordinary gift for making even the world’s most complex political and economic issues understandable, engaging, and relevant. Through his knowledge and curiosity, he inspired generations of students – not only to learn, but also to question, reflect, and see the world from new perspectives.
For Steve, teaching was far more than a profession. It was a calling and a way of contributing to a wiser, more open, and more peaceful world.
During his illness, he wrote:
“When I compare my life with the lives of all those who have lived before me, and with those living today, I realize how extraordinarily fortunate I have been. I have been able to devote my life to my passion – intellectual exploration and inspiring young people. I have been supported by an amazing circle of family and friends, and I have my wonderful wife Gunilla by my side.”
These words reflect the deep gratitude Steve felt for life, even during its most difficult moments.
Pancreatic cancer remains one of the deadliest forms of cancer. Research is moving forward, but far too slowly for those affected by the disease and for the families who stand beside them.
Throughout Steve’s journey with cancer, we received invaluable support, knowledge, and guidance from PALEMA, the Swedish cancer patient organization. They met us with warmth, dedication, and compassion, and gave us the feeling that we were not facing this alone.
For this reason, we have established a memorial fund in Stephen Turner’s name through PALEMA. All donations to the fund go directly toward pancreatic cancer research.
It feels deeply meaningful to allow Steve’s memory to live on by supporting research that may give others more time, better treatments, and greater hope.
If you would like to honor Steve with a memorial gift, you are warmly invited to contribute to his memorial fund through this page.
May Steve’s light live on – through love, knowledge, curiosity, and the hope of a future in which more lives can be saved.
With all our love and gratitude,
Gunilla and family
